We’ve hit pause on the Scholarship series for the Summer (here’s why), but that doesn’t mean we can’t bring you new awards when we find them.
This week, we found an interesting niche scholarship with an upcoming due date that we wanted to highlight for high school graduates in the class of 2025: The Tencent America Scholarship.
Now, why is this scholarship worth sharing?
The answer is in the fine print & its hyper-specific criteria:
This scholarship is for students who are interested in pursuing a college degree in a video game-related major.
Further, applicants must prove financial need to be eligible.
Finally, it states a preference for applicants in Southern California (see image below)
The focus on students interested in a video game-related major would normally be enough to give scholarship applicants a good chance to win, but the location feature is what really interested us.
It is no guarantee, but when they specifically call out a few counties it really boosts the chances that an applicant can win. We would wager a guess that Tencent is looking to get a recruiting edge on top talent in the area by helping to fund their education.
This is backed up by the fact that they include internship links on the scholarship application page and have at least two major offices in California (Los Angeles and Palo Alto).

Must be a high school graduate from class of 2025 and a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident
Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0
Students Enrolling in full-time U.S. undergrad, pursuing a video game-related major, and aspiring to enter the video game industry
